Dial Before You Dig

Before undertaking any excavation or ground disturbance works, please ensure you check the location of underground infrastructure.

Visit Before You Dig Australia (BYDA) to request information about underground assets in the Council district.

BYDA provides an online portal where requests can be made for information about the location and owner of underground infrastructure assets on a planned project site.

Before You Dig Australia (BYDA) – Service Location Enquiries

The District Council of Elliston is committed to protecting critical underground infrastructure and ensuring safe excavation practices across the District.

Council advises that it has recently uploaded its underground service asset data to Before You Dig Australia (BYDA), including:

  • Stormwater infrastructure
  • Community Wastewater Management System (CWMS) assets
  • Water supply infrastructure

What This Means for You

All enquiries relating to the location of Council underground services must now be submitted via Before You Dig Australia (BYDA).

BYDA is a free national referral service that connects you with infrastructure owners, including Council, to obtain plans and information about underground assets before undertaking any excavation.

Who Needs to Use BYDA?

You must lodge a BYDA enquiry if you are:

  • Excavating or trenching
  • Installing fencing, footings, or retaining walls
  • Undertaking plumbing, electrical or civil works
  • Conducting landscaping or vegetation removal involving ground disturbance

This applies to:

  • Contractors and utility providers
  • Developers and consultants
  • Council staff and service providers
  • Property owners and residents

How to Lodge an Enquiry

  1. Visit the BYDA website
  2. Submit an enquiry outlining your proposed works location and scope
  3. Receive plans and asset information from relevant asset owners (including Council)
  4. Review all documentation prior to commencing works

Important Notes

  • BYDA is now the primary and required pathway for obtaining Council underground service information
  • Council will no longer respond directly to ad hoc service location requests outside of BYDA
  • Lodging a BYDA enquiry helps ensure:
    • Protection of essential infrastructure
    • Compliance with safety and legislative requirements
    • Reduced risk of service damage, delays, and repair costs

Duty of Care

Failure to identify underground infrastructure prior to excavation may result in:

  • Damage to critical services
  • Safety risks to workers and the public
  • Financial liability for repairs
  • Project delays

How do I contact BYDA?
